Dogs and cats and bears, oh my!

Did you know that bears, dogs and cats are closely related? Bears and dogs are more closely related, but just a big further back and you get to the split between caniformia and feliformia. Let’s science! Check this out:

Bears:

Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Chordata
Class: Mammalia
Order: Carnivora
Suborder: Caniformia
Family: Ursidae

Family Dog:

Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Chordata
Class: Mammalia
Order: Carnivora
Suborder: Caniformia
Family: Canidae

Family Cat:

Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Chordata
Class: Mammalia
Order: Carnivora
Suborder: Feliformia
Family: Felidae

At it’s very watered down basics, they all likely spawn in their various branches from Dormaalocyon, a tiny little thing only about a foot long, which looks like a cross “between a tiny panther and a squirrel, with a long tail and a catlike snout”, says Dr Floréal Solé.

Dormaalocyon-latouriOne of the first carnivorous mammals! Who wants to bet this little guys would fuck your shit up?

If you know anything about evolution, you will know that, of course, at some point they are related, like everything else. It just blows me away how closely related they are.

I just wanted to give you guys the basics. If you want to get a really in depth, really good explanation, I highly recommend watching this.

Have a beautiful day sunshines!
